I’m sure you’ve all at least heard of Pokémon, the fandom that swept over the world in the ’90s and infected me with an everlasting fever that I believe will return periodically for the rest of my entire life.

Now, when people think of Pokémon, they think of a lot of things, but when I think of Pokémon; I think my best friend, Cody. He is the single greatest person I’ve ever known, and he is no longer with us.

Back in 2007, Cody and I started a joint journey. We both got a copy of FireRed and LeafGreen, and we played through and completed those Dexs—all 386 Pokémon from Bulbasaur to Deoxys. It took a long time to finish it all the way to the end, but we were dedicated. I dedicated over 700 hours across several third-generation games—LeafGreen, Emerald, and Ruby (including the two Gamecube requirements)—to get all the Pokémon that I needed. I don’t know his count off the top of my head, but it was high as well, maybe even higher because he got dedicated to breeding a shiny Charmander with Beat-up.

Back in 2011, I saw a news article about a girl Cody and I had gone to public school with. Her boyfriend and his best friend entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest play of Call of Duty. The Call of Duty record was, I think, 26 or so hours. Cody and I looked at each other and thought, “Hey, we could do that with Pokémon, no problem.” as we had on at least one occasion played Pokémon for 26 hours straight for free; for fun, because we were young and had nothing to do. Obtaining the record was something we had always talked about doing over the years.

After he passed, it kind of hurt a little bit knowing that he and I were never going to get that record together. However, after meditating on the matter for quite some time, I decided that it was something that I needed to.

So, I went and put in an application to Guinness World Records. While the record did not exist when Cody and I had had the idea, someone, funny enough also from Canada and name Cody (Harbridge), had set a record holds the record for the longest videogame marathon playing Pokémon games which he obtained by playing Pokémon Shield for 36 hours and 12 seconds.

So now, I have a record to beat that wasn’t there before. I went through the application process and was approved.

In my soul, I think it’s something that I need to do to get a little bit of closure. Grief is a really funny fucking thing and since April I have learned that there is no real operation manual.

All the things that you read or what people may or may not tell you to do really don’t matter in the end because this is probably one of the most fucking personal journeys that I have gone through.

I know that Cody would be really proud of me if I held the record and I know that’ll be there with me because his ashes WILL be there with me. I don’t believe they would grant the record posthumously, but, for me, he will always also be holding that record with me.

I’m currently trying to figure out how I’m going to go about it because, in a few months, I have a new baby on the way, so 37 hours (yes, I am not just going to break it by a bit) to spare for breaking a Guinness World Records will be a tough egg to crack.

However, my plan is to try and do it before April, which is when the baby is due.

With having said that, if you’re reading this, I would love it if you were able to follow me on Twitch and join me in this journey. I would love to be able to do it on Twitch where everyone could see so building up the channel is something I am going to be doing for the next little bit to hopefully reach affiliate status prior to.

You can expect me to be playing different things from Fortnite (which I have done a few streams of already), probably some Dead by Daylight with my gaming family with perhaps a little PUBG in the mix. I would also love to do a run-through of Catherine because I’ve heard some crazy, wicked things about that game, and it’s always been on my docket.

Down the road, who knows? I might do some joint watch parties for movies because you can stream movies that are on Prime Video through Twitch, which I think may be a fun time.

But yeah, before I die, I will hold the Guinness World Record for the longest videogame marathon playing Pokémon games and I would love if you could be there, watch along, and support me in any way you can.

Until next time, thanks for reading.
